PROCLAMATION
INTERNATIONAL EARTH DAY
San Francisco, California
International Earth Day 2007 Proclamation
San Francisco
WHEREAS, the first Earth Day was celebrated on the
first day of spring on March 21, 1970; and
WHEREAS, the Spring Equinox is recognized as a unique
moment of global equilibrium and is historically
celebrated by many as a symbol of renewal; and
WHEREAS, plans for the first Earth Day were announced
in San Francisco at the November 1969 UNESCO
Conference with the first Earth Day proclamation being
issued by San Francisco Mayor, Joseph Alioto on March
21, 1970; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Peace Bell is sounded
every year on the equinox as part of a global appeal
for universal peace and understanding, environmental
protection, and human community; and
WHEREAS, let every individual and institution now
think and act as a responsible trustee of Earth,
seeking the best choices in an effort to eliminate
pollution, poverty and violence in an effort to foster
a brighter future for all individuals; and
WHEREAS, the beautiful City of San Francisco is proud
to be part of
Earth Day and urges all to do their part to promote
peace and the well-being of all living creatures; now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Gavin Newsom, Mayor
of the City and County of San Francisco, in our
tradition to honor peace, justice, and care of our
Earth on the Spring Equinox, join with all San
Franciscans to honor, preserve, and restore Earth's
beauty, do hereby proclaim March 20, 2007 as...
International Earth Day
